Start 2012 With a Healthy Smile

With  the New Year now upon us many of us have thought about making New Year’s Resolutions and what better one to make than having regular dental visits and maintaining a healthy mouth.

Many of us forget that maintaining healthy gums is as important as preventing tooth decay. Our gums are the foundations of our teeth and contain the tiny fibres that hold our teeth in place. If our gums become diseased then this can often result in tooth loss.

Plaque is the main cause of gum disease. The bacteria in the plaque causes an initial infection in the gum which, if left, will start to cause the breakdown of the fibres that support our teeth. If this process continues the levels of bone around the teeth will reduce and the teeth will be unsupported and become mobile.

The plaque bacteria doesn’t just effect our mouths though. Reasearch has shown that there is a link between patients with gum disease also having conditions such as diabetes or heart disease and in women causing miscarriages and low birth weight babies. Factors such as smoking, stress and illness, including the common cold, can increase susceptibilty to the bacteria.

At White we routinely carry out a full gum screening and at every routine appointment. Bleeding gums is an initial sign of gum disease so if you notice any bleeding whilst brushing or flossing then have your gums checked by a dentist.

So please, if you have any concerns do book an appointment with a dentist to ensure that you start 2012 with a lovely healthy smile.

Despite not coming home with the winning trophy we all felt so elated to be finalists in such a prestigious Award Ceremony.

We would like to thank our wonderful patients and our superb team.

White supports National Mouth Cancer Month

Each November Mouth Cancer Awareness Month takes place However, when it comes to awareness mouth cancer is well down the list of high profile cancers that people know about.  Couple this with the fact mouth cancer kills more people than testicular and cervical cancers combined.

At White we screen all our patients for mouth cancer during their routine appointments. We equip our patients with the knowledge and awareness to be able to detect the signs. These being:

  • ulcers that do not heal within three weeks
  • red and white patches in the mouth
  • unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth

Better awareness and early detection saves lives  - early diagnosis improves survival chances to more than 90 per cent. Regular examinations with your dentist ensure you are professionally screened for the signs of mouth cancer.

A while ago one of patients came in to see us for a routine appointment. After examining his mouth our hygiene therapist, Claire, was concerned and asked for our dentists’s  opinion. Ben confirmed Claire’s suspicions that our patient had the early signs of Mouth Cancer.  The patient was told to contact his GP immediately and began to undergo treatment forthwith. He does not have Mouth Cancer any more and is fully recovered.

So, please if you have any concerns go and visit a dentist who screens their patients for Mouth Cancer.  Indeed, if you live near Southampton and wish to join a practice who does routine Mouth Cancer examinations then come and see us.

White professional development in dental implants

The White team recently visited London for the Friadent Dentsply Symposium, to spend a day with the leading innovators in the implant world.

We went to listen and learn from the world’s best dentists who are at the forefront of the latest techniques and insights.

It is very exciting news that Ben has now been asked to lead a lecture about implantology in the next couple of months, alongside mentoring and teaching other dentists at our Referral Evenings. He really enjoys the teaching side of his job and hope to develop this further in the future.

Team Sanya drops in for a dental visit

We welcomed Team Sanya, the Chinese entry in the Volvo Ocean Race, to our practice recently to ensure they were fit and healthy before the start of the race.

The team has been in Hamble for about ten weeks and headed off on their first leg to Alicante on September 15.

Mike Sanderson, CEO and skipper, said: “We all want to say a huge ‘Thanks to ‘Hamble’. We have been here nearly two and a half months (seems like more!) and have been made to feel really welcome.”

Everyone at White would like to wish the team all the best of luck.

Two missing front teeth beautifully restored

After smashing my two front teeth out when i was seven i had experienced nothing but pain and embarrassment. I had very dodgy crowns during my teenage years and 2 surgical operations to remove infection that was now in the upper palette of my mouth. I visited many dentists all of which found my case out of their depth. When one of my crowns began to fail my current local dentist who was an oral surgeon suggested an implant. I obviously had to agree but here is where I should have got a second opinion. I trusted in somebody I shouldn’t have. After very inadequate, incompetent and outrageously expensive treatment both my front teeth were missing. I had now totally lost all confidence in myself and dentists.

However my luck began to change after a search engine lead me to White. Here was a website with Testimonials’ and a free initial consultation! I was very apprehensive but had watched 10 years younger before so was aware that there were very talented and capable dentists out there!  My experience from then on has been life changing and reinstalled my faith in professionalism. The whole team is consistent, approachable and incredibly friendly. I had a treatment plan (which didn’t change) and opted for the interest free finance.  My dental work has been very extensive including a bone graft but it’s been worth it!

Dr Ben White is a true Genius!

Look at my smile,

Two Minutes Twice a day

National Smile Month 2011

Two Minutes, Twice a day

Not only does

brushing your teeth correctly keep smiles looking great, it can also help in the fight against serious conditions like heart disease, strokes and diabetes.

A good brushing routine will not only help fight problems like tooth decay, bad breath and stained teeth it will also reduce the chances of developing gum disease – which has been linked to heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and low birth weight babies.

Clinical research shows that, on average, people only brush for about  forty five seconds which is simply not enough to combat gum disease and tooth decay.

So go on, please brush for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. floss daily, cut down on sugary foods and drinks and visit your dentist on a regular basis.

Straight teeth and beautiful smiles available to all!

A patient that I had not met, until recently, came into White for an orthodontic appointment. A very elegant, attractive lady who is currently having her teeth straightened. She had “train tracks” on her teeth but despite this she still looked amazing. It was not long until her treatment was ending and she was really looking forward to going to her grandchild’s christening and being able to dazzle people with her lovely straight teeth.

I had orthodontics when I was in my twenties, which could be seen as unusual as surely it is children and teenagers who have their teeth straightened?  However, this lady had chosen improve her smile later in life. We are seeing more patients who are in their forties, fifties and sixties who are choosing to have their teeth straightened for many reasons.

Find out what White can do to to help if you are unhappy with your smile. It is never too late to make changes in your life.

At White, you can see your dream smile before the treatment begins with a cosmetic imaging software called Envision.

Simply, book a free cosmetic consultation with us (we are based not far from Southampton) and we can “envision” your perfect smile to help you to decide if cosmetic dentistry is for you.
