Start 2012 With a Healthy Smile

With  the New Year now upon us many of us have thought about making New Year’s Resolutions and what better one to make than having regular dental visits and maintaining a healthy mouth.

Many of us forget that maintaining healthy gums is as important as preventing tooth decay. Our gums are the foundations of our teeth and contain the tiny fibres that hold our teeth in place. If our gums become diseased then this can often result in tooth loss.

Plaque is the main cause of gum disease. The bacteria in the plaque causes an initial infection in the gum which, if left, will start to cause the breakdown of the fibres that support our teeth. If this process continues the levels of bone around the teeth will reduce and the teeth will be unsupported and become mobile.

The plaque bacteria doesn’t just effect our mouths though. Reasearch has shown that there is a link between patients with gum disease also having conditions such as diabetes or heart disease and in women causing miscarriages and low birth weight babies. Factors such as smoking, stress and illness, including the common cold, can increase susceptibilty to the bacteria.

At White we routinely carry out a full gum screening and at every routine appointment. Bleeding gums is an initial sign of gum disease so if you notice any bleeding whilst brushing or flossing then have your gums checked by a dentist.

So please, if you have any concerns do book an appointment with a dentist to ensure that you start 2012 with a lovely healthy smile.

White supports National Mouth Cancer Month

Each November Mouth Cancer Awareness Month takes place However, when it comes to awareness mouth cancer is well down the list of high profile cancers that people know about.  Couple this with the fact mouth cancer kills more people than testicular and cervical cancers combined.

At White we screen all our patients for mouth cancer during their routine appointments. We equip our patients with the knowledge and awareness to be able to detect the signs. These being:

  • ulcers that do not heal within three weeks
  • red and white patches in the mouth
  • unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth

Better awareness and early detection saves lives  - early diagnosis improves survival chances to more than 90 per cent. Regular examinations with your dentist ensure you are professionally screened for the signs of mouth cancer.

A while ago one of patients came in to see us for a routine appointment. After examining his mouth our hygiene therapist, Claire, was concerned and asked for our dentists’s  opinion. Ben confirmed Claire’s suspicions that our patient had the early signs of Mouth Cancer.  The patient was told to contact his GP immediately and began to undergo treatment forthwith. He does not have Mouth Cancer any more and is fully recovered.

So, please if you have any concerns go and visit a dentist who screens their patients for Mouth Cancer.  Indeed, if you live near Southampton and wish to join a practice who does routine Mouth Cancer examinations then come and see us.

Baby Bees is born

Little Madeline Bees was born before Christmas. What a wonderful Christmas present! Claire and Dave are absolutely besotted and we can all see why. Madeline is absolutely beautiful.

Billy (baby boy White) and I are off to visit The Bees Family next week and we cannot wait. Lots of cuddles with Madeline in between chasing a speedy toddler  as he tries to grab and destroy everything in his reach.

Claire Bees is off to have her baby!

With excitement and trepidation, Claire (our lovely therapist) went on Maternity leave at the beginning of December. Sooooo exciting! Baby Bees should be arriving on Claire and Dave’s wedding anniversary in Jan. When speaking to Claire at our Christmas Party she told me that she is having a fabulous time; lots of coffee mornings and lazy lunches. When asking about the nursery Claire admitted that there is still much to be done! Plenty of time……..

We have been joined by the lovely, Marie. She spent a few weeks shadowing Claire and is now up to speed with our systems and procedures. Our patients are beginning to get used to having a new therapist at White and have reported back to me that she is wonderful too, just like Claire. Lucky us.

Nervous North Baddesley lady regains confindence, receives gum treatment and new smile.

We recenlty received an email from a very nervous patient from North Baddesley explaining how self conscious she is about her smile and also the bad experiences she has had in the past. A reply was sent explaining how our team at White could help to rebuild her confidence and improve her smile. When she replied she explained how upsetting it was for her to write the initial email and how comforted she felt knowing we could help her, she also said “you sound too good to be true” but she was keen to meet us. We called her to discuss booking an appointment and after spending time on the phone with one of our friendly team members she felt ready to book a New Patient Consultation. We have started to re build her confidence and help her to overcome her fear of visiting the dentist.  After visiting White for the first time she felt relieved to have taken the first step and was very proud of herself. She was worried that she would need a lot of treatment but there wasn’t as much as she thought. She had some advanced gum problems and our therapist is working with her to help improve her gum health. We will then create a treatment plan for her which will include different cosmetic options of ways we can help her to smile again.

At White our friendly team are very experienced in dealing with nervous patients and are constantly helping patients to smile again.
